Beaten up with a crowbar, skull smashed with a beer bottle, maltreated with a spanner, raped, suffocated. The merry-go-round of violence in Dejan Dukovski’s "Pulverfass" is not for the faint of heart. The play by this Macedonian author, staged by Dimiter Gotscheff for steirischer herbst 2K, doubtless ranks among the best literary self-portraits of the Balkans in recent years – but goes far beyond the regional context in which it was written. For the destructive forces that transform inconspicuous neighbours into killers, kind uncles into rapists, and upright middle-class sons into arsonists can erupt any time in the "civilised" West, too. Making this clear and nevertheless conveying to the audience a deeper understanding of the historical present in the Balkans – in addition to the excellent theatrical performances – is one of the great merits of the production, which has been honoured by numerous invitations for guest performances (i.a. Sofia, Hamburg and Prague). steirischer herbst has decided to rerun this production because of its great international success.
