Our conception of literature has so far been tied to books, pages, paper. Literature in the electronic age offers us the option to imagine alphanumeric strings in different media, for example on screen – i.e. without the tie to books and paper. Experimental literature from Oulipo to the Wiener Gruppe already came up against the boundaries of the historical media of literature. Computer-assisted literature of the present (from "rock poetry" to "poetry rap") and manifold other forms are now perpetuating this trend in new electronic media. As media have changed, so too have the conditions of production ("the author becomes a kind of algorithm", P. Weibel), which leave clear marks on the literary product itself. What is more, programmes with interactive participation turn the reader himself into an "author", a navigator in the field of letters. A selection of some 20 positions will give the first synopsis of this new form of literature production.
