The title of this exhibition spotlights the great interest displayed by scientists, artists and actionists in the mind-expanding potential of drugs, particularly in the possibility of breaking through the borders of rational Western thought with the aid of hallucinogenic substances. "Timewave Zero – The Politics of Ecstasy" is conceived as a "vision machine" (F. Kiesler); the exhibits are intended to allow the visitor to experience epistemological border-crossings. In view of the fact that the visual arts have always dealt with the laws and limitations of a partial aspect of human perception, the exhibition primarily focuses on the visual, searching for the (long tabooed) mystery of the unattainable beyond the optical. But the selected works do not offer simple answers but formulate the problem with the aid of an abstract visual vocabulary. The exhibition catalogue is designed as a reader on the subject of drugs.
